During his historic address to Ghana’s Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed India as the “Mother of Democracy” and made a compelling case for amplifying the voice of the Global South on the world stage. In a speech that resonated with calls for inclusion, reform, and unity, PM Modi highlighted the vital role of emerging nations in shaping the global agenda and reaffirmed India’s commitment to empowering Africa and the Global South through platforms like the G20.

A Landmark Moment in India-Ghana Ties

PM Modi’s speech marked a significant moment in India-Ghana relations, underscoring the shared values of democracy, sovereignty, and development. The Prime Minister praised Ghana’s own democratic progress and vibrant civil society, calling the country a beacon of stability and leadership in West Africa.

“In a world where challenges are interconnected, our responses must be inclusive,” Modi stated. “India, as the Mother of Democracy, deeply values its partnership with Africa and believes the Global South must have a stronger voice in global governance.”

Championing the Global South

Echoing his earlier advocacy at international forums, PM Modi reiterated that the needs and aspirations of the Global South—nations from Africa, Latin America, and Asia—must not be overlooked in global policymaking.

He emphasized India’s leadership in elevating issues like sustainable development, climate justice, and equitable growth for developing nations. Citing India’s G20 presidency, he noted the inclusion of the African Union (AU) as a permanent member of the G20—a landmark decision India championed to bring Africa’s voice to the core of global economic decisions.

A Vision for an Equitable World Order

The Prime Minister outlined a vision for a multipolar world order rooted in justice and cooperation, where developing nations are not just participants but equal contributors to global solutions. He urged multilateral institutions to reform and adapt to 21st-century realities, ensuring fair representation and decision-making powers for countries of the Global South.

“India’s growth is not just for itself,” Modi added. “It is a catalyst for a more inclusive and balanced world. We walk the path of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.”
