Delhi Government Pushes School Fee Bill After Protests, Political Pressure
In the wake of growing unrest among parents and mounting political pressure, the Delhi government is finally set to table the much-awaited School Fee Regulation Bill in the upcoming Assembly session. The move comes after months of criticism from the opposition and intense protests by parents who have accused private schools of arbitrary fee hikes and the government of inaction.
A Long-Pending Demand
The issue of unjustified school fee hikes has been simmering in Delhi for years. Parents across the capital have repeatedly complained about unauthorised charges, mid-term fee increases, and lack of transparency from private institutions. Despite multiple assurances from the government, concrete legislative action had been long overdue, leading to public frustration.
The delay in introducing the bill had also become a key political flashpoint. Opposition leaders accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of turning a blind eye to the plight of middle-class families while protecting the interests of private school lobbies.
“This government came to power promising to reform education, but when parents needed them the most, they remained silent. What stopped them from acting sooner?” said a senior leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been leading the charge against the government’s delay.
Parent Protests Gain Momentum
Over the past several weeks, groups of concerned parents have taken to the streets, organised social media campaigns, and held meetings with education officials, demanding a cap on fees and more regulatory oversight. In many cases, parents have alleged that schools are charging unjustified development fees, technology fees, and even forcing the purchase of uniforms and books from specific vendors at inflated prices.
A parent from South Delhi, speaking at a recent protest, said, “We’re not against schools making profits, but the system has become exploitative. There’s no accountability. Every year, fees go up without explanation. The government needs to step in.”
These demonstrations, coupled with critical media coverage and opposition pressure, appear to have finally pushed the government into action.

What the Bill Is Expected to Cover
Though the final draft of the School Fee Regulation Bill is yet to be made public, sources suggest it will propose the creation of a Fee Regulatory Authority to monitor and approve fee structures proposed by private schools. The bill is also expected to include provisions for:

Education Minister Atishi confirmed that the bill aims to ensure “transparency, fairness, and accountability” in school fee practices. “Our commitment to parents remains strong. This bill will bring much-needed regulation and protect families from financial exploitation,” she stated.
Opposition Not Convinced
Despite the announcement, opposition leaders continue to express skepticism about the timing and intent behind the bill. Some have dismissed it as a reactionary measure meant to placate angry parents ahead of the next Assembly session and upcoming municipal elections.
“The government is scrambling now because they’ve been exposed. They had all the time in the world to act—but they waited until the situation reached a boiling point,” said a BJP spokesperson.
